Common Core PD: Thoughts?

I'd like to know your reflection of what you did today during your PD session. Please pair up with someone in your department and post a brief but descriptive reflection of what you learned and what you can take away and use immediately in your classrooms (if anything).

Blooms and Assessment

During our PD session today, we explored the value of our assessments and using Revised Blooms question stems, we analyzed one assessment that was given to our kids. We also worked together with someone NOT in our department to analyze our assessments and then create questions that combined both contents. Reflect on what you learned or thought about today's PD and what you might take away from it.

An Introduction to Project Based Learning 6-12

Below is the link to a video about Project Based Learning. Please reflect on the questions below and talk with your colleagues about their thoughts. We will discuss this video and your answers to the questions at our next meeting.

1. One of the students in the video said, "I learn better by learning from my own experiences." Do you believe this is true? If so, how do you facilitate this in your classroom? If not, explain why you feel that way.

2. As the professor from MIT is talking about curriculum, he says, "this means that you put kids in a position to use the knowledge they gain." Describe at least two ways you do this in your classroom that does not involve tests or quizzes.

3. Describe the differences between a traditional setting classroom and a project based learning classroom.

Module #1: Importance of Formative Assessment

NCFALCON Module #1: Importance of Formative Assessment

The Guiding Mission of the NC State Board of Education "is that every public school student will graduate from high school, globally competitive for work and post-secondary education and prepared for life in the 21st century." This "looks like": Critical Thinkers and Self-Directed Learners.

What does your department BELIEVE is OUR role as high school educators in helping our kids achieve this goal? (please do not talk about the student's role...discuss our role as educators). Describe at least five ways YOUR department plans to help our kids accomplish this mission. Also describe what "critical thinkers and self-directed learners" looks like in your classrooms.
